What is Crop Factor?

Crop factor compares sensor size to full-frame (35mm). A 50mm lens on APS-C (1.6x) gives the same field of view as an 80mm lens on full-frame.

Note

Crop factor affects field of view and depth of field, but not the actual focal length or aperture of the lens.

Understanding Crop Factor

Crop factor is the ratio of a sensor's diagonal to that of a full-frame (35mm) sensor. It affects field of view and depth of field.

  • Smaller sensors = higher crop factor
  • Higher crop factor = narrower field of view
  • Affects depth of field appearance

Common Sensor Sizes

Full Frame (1.0x)

36 Γ— 24mm - Professional cameras

APS-C (1.5-1.6x)

~23 Γ— 15mm - Enthusiast cameras

Micro Four Thirds (2.0x)

17.3 Γ— 13mm - Compact systems

1" Sensor (2.7x)

13.2 Γ— 8.8mm - Premium compacts
