US vs UK Gallons
The difference between US and UK gallons is significant and important to understand:
- US gallon = 3.785 liters (used in the United States)
- UK (Imperial) gallon = 4.546 liters (used in UK and some Commonwealth countries)
- UK gallon is about 20% larger than US gallon
- Always specify which gallon type when converting
Fuel Economy Note
When comparing fuel economy between countries, remember that US MPG and UK MPG are different because they use different gallons. A car getting 30 MPG (US) would get about 36 MPG (UK) due to the larger UK gallon. Most countries use liters per 100 km instead.
